Spar’s latest flagship eco stores have become Europe’s first wave of all-LED supermarkets. Mark Burgess reports

The Spar supermarket chain began rolling out its eco stores this summer – and after considering a mix of T5 and LED opted to make them totally LED. The capital cost is higher – but the installation is maintenance free, and saves 50 per cent energy over an equivalent store lit with fluorescent and HID.

The first two stores – both in Austria, one in Vienna and the other in Styria – have won the Austrian equivalent of the Breeam Excellent rating from the Austrian Society for Sustainable Real Estate (OGNI).

No compromise

But the lit interior hasn’t been compromised to achieve the savings, says Spar. Good colour rendering and appearance was crucial. Colour consistency between all the modules was also a big concern of the supermarket giant.

‘The lighting ticks all the boxes in terms of what we need for an attractive shopfloor,’ says Spar’s energy chief Gerald Geiger.

Spar has a continent-wide agreement with Zumtobel, who advised on the specification and supplied all the kit using its Zumtobel, Thorn and Tridonic brands.

LEDs everywhere

The background lighting is provided by Tecton continuous trough system embedded with the Tridonic Talexx LED engine, while the accent lighting to the shelves is provided by the SL1000 LED spotlights. Panos LED downlights – some 70 per cent more efficient than CFL, according to Zumtobel – provide the ambient light. The checkout areas are lit by square Careena LED luminaires – but the LED lighting doesn’t end there.

A total of 29 Thorn Dyana LED luminaires, each equipped with 36 LEDs and with power consumption of 45W per luminaire, light up the entire car park.

LED modules and light engines for the illuminated advertising, shelf lighting and refrigerated cabinet lighting are all Tridonic.
