The Dominion Centre in Wood Green, London has changed from a theatre to a place of worship. The building was constructed in the 1930s as the Gaumont Palace – a cinema and theatre – before suffering the indignity of becoming a bingo hall. More recently, it has gained a new lease of life as the Dominion Centre.
The building has a high ceiling from which shine a dozen 400W metal-halide house lights that are recessed into the ornate plasterwork. During a recent refurbishment, it became clear that the house lights should be supplemented by extra luminaires to make the lighting scheme more flexible – and to eliminate the restrike or run-up delays associated with metal-halide light sources.
Fitting the bill
The challenge was to identify fittings that would deliver instant, high-output lighting and low energy consumption without requiring maintenance access from below. The answer was, of course, LEDs. Specifically Cooper Lighting and Safety’s RXD1 LED downlights.
Sixty-five of the fittings have been installed at the centre. The RXD1 uses a multi-chip LED light source. Unlike conventional high-output LEDs, this multi-chip source incorporates several LEDs in a single package, giving increased light output from a smaller area.
The luminaire has a consumes 25W and achieves an efficacy of up to 61 lumens per circuit watt, exceeding the requirements of the latest Building Regulations – 55 lumens per circuit watt for commercial lighting (Part L2), or 45 lumens per circuit watt for residential lighting (Part L1).
To ensure the LED sources in the fittings last as long as possible, the luminaires incorporate a pure water heat- pipe cooling technology, which transfers heat away from the back of the LED source to the cooling fins. No large heatsinks are necessary and the RXD1 downlight should enjoy a maintenance-free life of 50,000 hours.
Charles Amoah of Amsons Electrical Contractors says the fittings make the installation much more flexible. He says: ‘For smaller meetings in particular, the LED downlights are often used on their own without the main house lights, which means that we are making significant energy savings.’
