National Rail has fitted an efficient linear lighting scheme at the busy Finsbury Park Station. Pennie Varvarides reports

Finsbury Park railway station, operated by Network Rail, is a major interchange with the London Underground. The station is always packed, with thousands of people passing through at peak hours. When the time came to refurbish the lighting this crowding had to be considered, not only for passenger comfort, but also for their safety.

Previously the station was home to a mixture of recessed fluorescents built into the roof structure of one platform and ceiling-mounted fluorescents on another.

No more mismatch

Enter May Gurney and AGH Engineering, who were asked to unify the mismatched lighting. Network Rail wanted continuous lighting under the canopy that contained its own cabling. This would make installation and maintenance easier.

And maintenance was key. Network Rail demanded a system that would be easy to cope withpost-installation.

The luminaires chosen were Primashield Elite from Holophane, with two 36W T5 lamps. Fluorescentsources were specified for continuous lighting, according to Holophane’s project manager, Neville Stokes.

Stokes adds: ‘The life of the T5 lamps should be much longer than the discharge lamps previously installed and therefore reduce the number of ongoing lamp changes.’

Replacing the existing 150W T12 discharge lamps, Holophane installed approximately 55 standard twin 36W and 60 36W emergency versions. There were also around eight twin 49W emergency  ttings. The reason for the approximations was that they kept adding fittings for other areas.

The fittings have a secure hinged door for access to the luminaire during lamp changes or general maintenance. The hinged lamp and reflector assembly gives contractors access to gear and the DIN-rail power conductors.

If the station’s lights went out during a power failure, passengers would be put at risk. The Primashield fittings installed at Finsbury Park have a maintained emergency lighting function which is activated automatically if the power fails so the fittings can supply light for three hours.

Another issue peculiar to railway stations is vibration. A train passes through the station every few minutes during busy periods and around every half hour as the day draws to a close. The Prismashield Elite has a robust case designed to withstand physical attack, exposure to the elements and heavy vibration.

Public address

The lighting installation also incorporates the public address system. The contractor first installed cable containment, and the flttings were clicked into place later. If the station’s maintenance or management teams want to move lighting modules, it is a relatively simple task.

The luminaires are fitted with polycarbonate lenses with internal prisms to deliver a mixture of symmetric and asymmetric light distributions.

This arrangement gave the designers the freedom and  exibility to create the desired effect across different parts of the platforms without changing the appearance of the fittings.
